French technology firm Thales has expanded its presence in India with the opening of a new office in Bengaluru, which will serve as an extension of its Engineering Competence Centre (ECC), established initially in 2019.
The ECC focuses on advancing software and hardware capabilities across both civil and defence sectors. Since its establishment, the centre has played a significant role in job creation and skill development, now employing over 500 individuals, according to the company.
In India, Thales has a robust presence, having been operational in the country since 1953. With its Indian headquarters in Noida and additional offices across major cities including Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, the company employs over 2,000 individuals, including those in joint ventures.
“As we grow our engineering set-up in Bengaluru together with that in Noida, we continue to develop in-country capabilities by leveraging our global expertise and local talent, fostering new opportunities and innovations for Indian and global customers,” said Ashish Saraf, VP and Country Director for India, Thales.
Thales’ investment in research and development is notable, with an annual expenditure of close to €4 billion globally. The Bengaluru centre, alongside the Noida centre, forms a key part of Thales’ engineering network.
The Bengaluru team is involved in various high-value aerospace and defence projects, including but not limited to Air Traffic Management, avionics systems, and radar software.
Globally, Thales employs over 77,000 people across 68 countries. In 2022, the company’s sales amounted to €17.6 billion. With a diverse range of expertise, company specialises in areas including quantum technologies, Edge computing, 6G, and cybersecurity.
Thales has played a key role in sectors such as defence, transport, aerospace, and digital identity and security in India. Its engineering centres in Noida and Bengaluru are integral to its operations, focusing on a range of technological developments in digital identity and security, as well as hardware, software, and systems engineering for civil and defence applications.
The company has stated that its new Bengaluru facility embodies a modern and sustainable approach to workplace design, integrating elements of traditional Indian architecture and script. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the office offers disabled-friendly features and energy-efficient systems, aligning with Thales’ global commitments to environmental and social responsibility.
