Apple is expected to break from its traditional iPhone launch pattern by releasing only the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max this month, while holding back the standard iPhone 18 until early 2027, according to supply chain research from TrendForce.
The Cupertino-headquartered company has scheduled a special event called ‘Surprise and shine’ for 9 September at 10.30pm IST. Apple has not confirmed what it will announce, but analyst forecasts and supply chain reporting now broadly point to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable iPhone launching this month.
The strategic shift could mark Apple’s most significant change to its annual iPhone release cycle in years. The company has traditionally refreshed its mainstream and Pro iPhones together each September.
“TrendForce now says Apple is moving to a split launch cycle, with the Pro models and foldable arriving in the autumn and the standard iPhone 18 and other variants following in the first quarter of 2027,” the research firm stated in its analysis.
iPhone 18 processor upgrade
The biggest internal change expected on the Pro models is Apple’s A20 Pro processor. TrendForce reports that the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and foldable iPhone will use a chip produced on TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process, a significant step down from the current node.
Moving to a smaller process node typically allows chip designers to improve performance, power efficiency or both. The gains matter particularly because smartphones are being asked to perform more machine-learning inference locally, rather than sending every AI request to cloud servers.
TrendForce says Apple is also expected to change its memory packaging architecture from InFO to WMCM, shortening signal paths and helping control heat during intensive workloads. The research company characterises the hardware improvements as focused heavily on processing, cooling, cameras and battery life rather than a completely new user experience.
Apple may also introduce its C2 cellular modem, the successor to its existing in-house modem technology, according to reports compiled by MacRumors. The objective is tighter integration between Apple’s modem, processor and operating system, which could potentially improve power consumption and connectivity management.
Camera improvements
The camera could deliver the most interesting practical change. TrendForce expects Apple’s Pro models to introduce the company’s first mechanical variable-aperture system for the main rear camera.
Aperture controls the size of the opening through which light enters a camera lens. Current iPhones rely on fixed physical apertures, with computational photography handling most exposure and depth-of-field decisions. A mechanical variable aperture would give the camera another optical tool: a wider aperture can admit more light in darker environments, while a narrower aperture can increase depth of field in bright scenes.

Reports of Apple developing such a system have circulated for more than two years. Some recent reporting suggests variable aperture could initially be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, though this remains uncertain until Apple’s presentation.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max already have three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras and an 18-megapixel Centre Stage front camera, along with professional video capabilities including ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2. Variable aperture, sensor changes and low-light improvements may refine an already substantially upgraded system rather than represent a wholesale redesign.
Apple pricing pressure
For buyers, the most consequential change may have nothing to do with cameras or processors. Memory prices have risen sharply, and TrendForce estimates that memory costs associated with a 256GB Pro model in the third quarter of 2026 are nearly 400 per cent higher than a year earlier.
The research firm’s bill-of-materials analysis estimates that the overall component cost of a 256GB iPhone Pro has increased approximately 38 per cent year over year. TrendForce therefore expects Apple to raise prices by roughly 10 to 20 per cent, while absorbing part of the increase through lower margins.
Based on that forecast and Apple’s existing US pricing structure, MacRumors estimates the iPhone 18 Pro could land around $1,249 to $1,299, compared with $1,099 for the previous generation. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could reach roughly $1,349 to $1,399, up from $1,199.
The India question is more complicated because Apple does not simply convert US pricing at the prevailing exchange rate. For reference, Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro in India at ₹1,34,900 and the 17 Pro Max at ₹1,49,900. Current Indian reporting has produced a wide range of estimates for their successors, and Apple has provided no guidance.
An increase is increasingly plausible, though specific rupee figures remain speculative ahead of the announcement.
The memory-cost issue is particularly important because a higher price would not necessarily correspond to an equally large jump in visible features. A substantial part of any increase may simply reflect highercomponent costs rather than new capabilities.
Design changes are expected to be modest. MacRumors reports that the overall chassis will change so little that existing iPhone 17 Pro cases may fit the corresponding iPhone 18 Pro models, though a thicker camera plateau could complicate compatibility. The Dynamic Island notch could shrink by roughly 35 per cent, according to multiple reports, though claims of a completely uninterrupted display or full under-screen Face ID should be treated cautiously.
Battery life could emerge as another important distinction. TrendForce says internal optimisation is expected to allow larger batteries across Apple’s premium 2026 models, with the Pro Max benefiting most. Together with the A20 Pro’s improved power efficiency and a move to more efficient LTPO+ display architecture, runtime improvements could be more noticeable than battery-capacity figures alone suggest.
