LUCKNOW — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met senior officials from the National Statistical Commission (NSC) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to discuss measures to strengthen the state’s statistical system, officials said on Tuesday.
The meeting, held ahead of a one-day interaction between the NSC and the state’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), focused on improving data collection and analysis to support Uttar Pradesh’s target of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy.
CM Adityanath said the state government was committed to data-based decision-making and cited the use of digital tools such as the Chief Minister’s Dashboard and the One Trillion Economy Mission for real-time monitoring.
Focus on data quality
According to the state government, discussions covered areas including state GDP estimation, consumer price index, employment indicators and industrial statistics. The Chief Minister appreciated the role of MoSPI and the NSC in improving data accuracy and consistency.
NSC Chairman Prof. Rajiva Laxman Karandikar said reliable data was essential for evidence-based policymaking and noted that the commission would continue to support Uttar Pradesh on technical aspects such as Gross State Domestic Product estimation, price statistics and survey design.
He added that closer coordination between central and state statistical systems would help ensure the comparability and timeliness of data across government levels.
Central support for capacity building
MoSPI Secretary Dr. Saurabh Garg said the ministry would continue technical and financial support for Uttar Pradesh under its Support for Statistical Strengthening scheme. The plan includes upgrading data management systems, building modern statistical infrastructure and training DES officials on new methods and technologies.
Officials said the state’s DES has been contributing to national surveys such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey, the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises.
Uttar Pradesh was also noted for having one of the lowest inflation rates among large states and for regularly publishing its Index of Industrial Production.
The meeting also discussed preparations for revising the base year of GDP and industrial production to 2022–23. MoSPI said it would assist in developing new item baskets and factory frames for the exercise.
Strengthening coordination
The NSC commended the state’s efforts to integrate statistics with governance and development planning. It encouraged the DES to expand its coverage to emerging sectors such as digital and service-based industries and to focus on improving data quality at the district level.
CM Adityanath said credible data was critical for measuring progress in agriculture, industry, health and education, and reiterated the state’s commitment to collaborating with central agencies.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination through regular consultations, training and digital initiatives to promote a transparent, technology-driven statistical framework that supports the state’s economic and social development goals.
