The Maha , one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, began today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Spread across 4,000 acres along the banks of the Ganga, the event is expected to draw over 40 crore pilgrims over the next 45 days.

Compared to the 2019 Kumbh Mela, which attracted nearly 24 crore visitors, this year’s event is poised to accommodate an even larger turnout, supported by enhanced infrastructure and technological interventions, said a senior functionary.

Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹6,990 crore for the Mela, almost double the ₹3,700 crore spent in 2019. This supports 549 projects focusing on infrastructure, sanitation, crowd management, and public services. Officials estimate that the event could generate direct revenues of ₹25,000 crore and contribute an economic impact of ₹2 lakh crore to the state’s economy.

Technology for Crowd Management

This year’s Mela emphasises the use of technology for managing large crowds and improving operational efficiency. Smart surveillance systems and drones are being deployed for real-time monitoring, while AI-based analytics are being used to manage crowd flow in high-density areas. Special corridors have been set up to facilitate the movement of up to 20,000 people at a time, ensuring safety during peak periods.

Digital payment systems have been introduced across food stalls, accommodation providers, and small vendors, with 2,000 vendors trained in cashless transactions. Booking platforms for accommodations, ranging from budget tents to luxury stays, have also been digitalized to provide greater accessibility.

The Mela infrastructure has seen significant upgrades since the last Kumbh. The number of tents has increased to 1.6 lakh, including 2,200 luxury accommodations, compared to fewer high-end options in 2019. Registered homestays have also grown from 15 to 100 this year, indicating greater participation by local residents. Additionally, the city now features 218 hotels, 204 guest houses, and 90 dharamshalas to support the influx of visitors.

The floating jetties, tourism packages, and water sports introduced this year reflect a focus on diversifying visitor experiences. These initiatives are expected to encourage longer stays and contribute to the local economy.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has projected significant contributions from key sectors, including ₹5,000 crore from puja items, ₹4,000 crore from dairy products, and ₹800 crore from flowers. The hospitality sector is estimated to generate ₹6,000 crore, bolstered by demand for high-end accommodations and dining options.

Competitive bidding for stalls has added another layer of economic activity. Entrepreneurs and businesses have secured prime locations by bidding up to ₹1.23 crore. Local vendors and small-scale businesses are also leveraging the opportunity, with over 7,000 registered vendors operating at the event.

Managing the of an event on this scale involves challenges, including construction delays and fluctuating demand. However, officials report that technology has helped mitigate many operational issues. Local businesses view the Mela as a significant economic opportunity, with revenues during this period often matching or exceeding annual earnings.

Local businesses see the Mela as a major economic opportunity, with some reporting revenues during this period matching or exceeding their annual earnings. “The Maha Kumbh Mela creates a unique ecosystem where faith and commerce intersect, benefiting people across various sectors,” said a local industry representative.

As the Mela progresses, its ability to blend traditional spiritual practices with modern organisational capabilities continues to attract attention, positioning it as a significant event for both religious and economic reasons.
