With the polling date approaching fast, campaigning has hit the peaks across Telangana where elections for the posts of 2,727 ward members in 120 municipalities and 385 posts of councillors in the nine municipal corporations are scheduled to take place on January 22.
According to notification, polling in municipalities and municipal corporations will be held on January 22 and the results will be declared on January 25. However, ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has already won 77 wards unanimously in various municipalities and three AIMIM candidates also were declared elected after the other candidates withdrew nominations in their support.
About 53.37 lakh voters will be able to utilise their franchise during the polls. Telangana State Election Commission released the draft list of photo identity electoral rolls and the draft of final list was published on January 4 after disposing all objections and suggestions.
“Besides making the voters’ list available in all wards, we also incorporated it on the Commission’s website for the convenience of voters and also political parties. People whose names are missing from the electoral rolls can approach the Electoral Registration Officer and submit their applications using Form 6, 7 or 8 and the same will be examined before being allowed to vote,” he said.
Municipal Administration director TK Sridevi said that reservations were finalised on January 5 as per 2019 voters list for BCs and as per 2011 Census for SCs and STs. As per new Act, 50 per cent reservation for women also were allotted as per schedule.
