Dhaka — The director-general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Additional IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said the list of perpetrators of various crimes involving the use of various mobile apps including TikTok and Likee is being prepared to ascertain the impact of the apps on the law & order and crime.
Mamun was speaking as a chief guest at the ‘Shadow Parliament Debate Competition’ on ‘Misuse of Social Media to Increase Juvenile Crime’ organised by the Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) in the capital on Saturday.
“82 per cent of the people who use the internet live through social media. Social media is also largely responsible for various crimes. Negative aspects should be avoided by adopting technology. There is no chance of getting through any kind of crime, now no one is getting through crime. Even then, if anyone commits a crime, strict action will be taken,” he said.
The RAB chief also urged parents to keep an eye on their children to curb their exposure to juvenile gangs and militancy. “Crimes will be reduced if everyone takes responsibility from their positions,”
Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran, chairman of Debate for Democracy, said juvenile delinquency was on the rise. He raised the issue of low-income girls being sent to India for prostitution using controversial apps.
Citing two recent cases in which social media apps were used to lure women, he said as a result, mischievous tickling Hridoy and Apu is being created. Women are being employed in bad jobs with money in the online app.
“It’s time to ban controversial apps, including TikTok. Parents need to pay more attention to the child, give time. If the youth fails, the state will fail. No one can avoid responsibility,” he said.
