Over 1.5 million families in Bangladesh to get PM’s Eid gift in ‘cash’

Dhaka — Prime Minister has started distributing gifts to 14 lakh 97 thousand families who lost their jobs in various professions due to the ongoing coronavirus situation.

Each family listed on the GTP system is getting assistance at Tk 2,500, which will be distributed before Eid by one of the country's top financial service operators, ‘Nagad'.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the program from her official residence Ganabhaban by distributing Eid gifts to 15 poor families in Bhola, Chittagong and Joypurhat districts.

Beneficiaries including Deputy Commissioners of their respective districts took part in the program organized through video conferencing. The function was conducted by Hon'ble Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister (Prime Minister's Office) Ahmed Kaikaus from Ganabhaban. Others were present at the time.

Apart from ‘cash', the Prime Minister is giving Eid gifts to about 33 lakh 39 thousand families through two more mobile companies.

In this phase, the Prime Minister's Eid gifts will be distributed to 45 percent of the total beneficiary families through ‘cash'. One of the remaining two operators will distribute 31.57 percent and the other company will distribute the rest.

On the first day, the Eid gifts of the Prime Minister have been distributed to about 11,000 beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries do not incur any additional cost in case of cash out of this government assistance. The government will pay Tk 15 for the total cash out cost, the rest will be borne by Nagad.

Regarding the distribution of PM's Eid gifts through mobile wallets, Tanvir A Mishuk, Managing Director, Nagad, said, This is the foresight of our Hon'ble Prime Minister. Moreover, due to his increased interest in digital services, poor and disadvantaged people are now able to get government grants on their mobile phones at home.

Earlier last year, she also took the initiative to provide financial assistance to 5 million families who lost their jobs due to Covid before Eid. There, ‘Nagad' was tasked with delivering Eid gifts to 1.7 million families.
