Fact Check: Is Bangladesh govt recording everything on WhatsApp

Dhaka — A rumor that ‘the government is recording everything on WhatsApp’ is spreading fast in Bangladesh.

“If you send an anti-government message through this medium, will show three blue tick marks, meaning the government snooping it. And if it shows a red tick, then the government will take action,” read an unsubstantiated rumor being spread on different platforms.

An official of the Bangladesh Regulatory Commission (BTRC) told the reporters that they are not aware of any such rumors and no one has contacted them in this regard.

This is not the first time that messaging app has become a of rumors. Earlier, in January this year, there were rumors about WhatsApp in India that the government was recording calls/messages on social media, including WhatsApp. Then India Today checked the facts and said that the rumors were completely false.

Since the beginning of 2021, WhatsApp has been facing pushback from different groups who say that its new privacy policy may infringe upon the user’s and privacy, however, the company categorically denied the allegation.
