India overtook the United States to become the largest market for mobile developer course searches in 2016, with search queries for mobile development training growing 200 per cent year-on-year over the past two years, according to data released by Google India.
The surge in demand reflects India’s growing smartphone user base, which reached 220 million active devices, surpassing the US in mobile adoption. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra emerged as the leading states for mobile developer course searches, accounting for the bulk of queries.
Google said approximately 16,500 students from India enrol every month in mobile development training programmes. These courses cover Android app development, mobile web development and cloud-based technologies, which enable developers to build applications that run on remote servers rather than on individual devices.
State-level growth
Search interest in mobile development courses showed strong growth beyond the traditional technology hubs. Uttar Pradesh recorded a 70 per cent year-on-year increase in search queries, while Bihar saw query growth of 158 per cent year-on-year, according to Google’s data.
“We have seen tremendous response across mobile developer courses from India, with 16,500 students enrolling every month, taking up Android development, mobile web development and learning new cloud-based technology courses,” Peter Lubbers, head, Google Developer Training, said in a statement.
Vocational training courses now comprise 40 per cent of India’s total education-related search volume, growing at 50 per cent year-on-year, Google India said. Mobile development courses, however, account for only six per cent of overall IT-related course searches, suggesting significant room for growth as industry demand for skilled mobile developers continues to rise.
Training landscape
Several private training providers have emerged to meet this demand. Simplilearn, Udacity, Edureka, Koenig, Manipal Global and UpGrad are among the key players offering mobile development courses in India.
“Over 65 per cent of our mobile developer learners in India comprise of college students and fresh graduates, compared to the US where 60 per cent of the learners are working professionals between the age group 25-44,” Krishna Kumar, chief executive officer, Simplilearn, said.
The demographic difference suggests Indian learners are acquiring mobile development skills earlier in their careers, potentially creating a pipeline of trained developers for the domestic and global technology industry.
