Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp go for a toss, back after six-hour outage

Causing major global outrage, the networks of top technology giants including social media leader Facebook went for a toss after users across the world reported glitches in logging on to their accounts.  Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp — all the platforms had reported similar glitches for a large number of users globally on yesterday.

Users on Instagram have also reported the same issue. Some users have also experienced some problems with the Facebook-owned messaging app, Whatsapp as the messages were not getting sent.

While the news feed of Facebook was not responding for app users, for the ones on the website the URL was reported to be stuck at the time of filing the story. Instagram was also not working on the website and others were facing some problems with the app.

Many users have reported on Twitter and we have checked that the Facebook-owned social media platforms and messaging app are down.

Facebook has commented on the matter. A WhatsApp spokesperson said that “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.”

In a statement, Facebook further said that “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Online reports have revealed that Facebook in an internal memo said, “We are receiving reports that several FB services are down (Internal Tools, Work chat, Workplace, Workplace Rooms, FB, IG, WhatsApp, etc.). This appears to be a DNS issue that is impacting both internal and external access to our tools and apps.”

The services are back now and running after an outage that lasted almost six hours. The company says the cause was a faulty configuration change.

Outages track detector platform Downdetector said it was the largest failure it had ever seen, with 10.6 million problem reports around the world.
