The Government of Maharashtra has allotted 100 acres of land in Navi Mumbai to RRP Electronics for the establishment of a semiconductor fabrication facility. According to the company, the fab will have a planned capacity of 125,000 wafers per month and will be supported by equipment relocated from an existing facility in Sherman, Texas.
The announcement was made in Mumbai where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented a Letter of Comfort to the company. State officials said the project is part of the broader India Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2021 to encourage local chip manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said the move represents an important step in positioning Maharashtra within the country’s technology roadmap. “This allotment of land firmly positions Maharashtra at the heart of India’s Semiconductor Mission roadmap. Our government is fully committed to extending all necessary support, be it in infrastructure, policy facilitation or skill development to ensure the success of this initiative,” he said.
He added that the facility would not only boost industrial growth but also create employment opportunities, strengthen supply chains and reinforce Maharashtra’s role as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
Rajendra Chodankar, chairman, RRP Electronics, said the land allotment marked a milestone for the company. “We are thankful to the Government of Maharashtra and Honourable Chief Minister and his team for the continued encouragement and support towards enabling Maharashtra in taking pioneering initiatives for the semiconductor ecosystem. This acquisition is a landmark step in our journey to make India self-reliant in semiconductors,” he said.
The development follows the launch last year of Maharashtra’s first outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Navi Mumbai. According to the state government, the new fab will represent a significant addition to the semiconductor ecosystem and will contribute to India’s ambition of becoming more competitive in the global supply chain.
India currently imports the bulk of its semiconductors, which are critical to a wide range of industries including electronics, automobiles and telecommunications. Government-backed initiatives in states such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have been introduced to attract global and domestic investment in this sector.
Analysts note that while the potential is considerable, semiconductor fabrication requires heavy capital investment, reliable infrastructure and highly skilled labour, all of which pose challenges to new entrants.
RRP Electronics said its aim is to contribute to the long-term growth of the domestic industry by developing advanced manufacturing capacity in India. The company, which is backed by former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, specialises in semiconductor packaging technologies and has said it intends to position itself as a key player in the country’s push towards technological self-reliance.
