US-based enterprise data protection company Commvault on Tuesday launched a new cloud-native service aimed at improving the protection of data stored using the S3 protocol, as companies increasingly rely on object storage for application backups and artificial intelligence workloads.
The service, called Unified Data Vault, is designed to allow organisations to apply encryption, immutability and policy-based controls to data written to S3-compatible storage, without installing additional software agents or creating separate data management systems.
S3-based object storage has become a default option for many developers and enterprises to store backups from databases and software platforms. However, such data is often spread across multiple storage buckets with varying retention rules, which can create compliance risks and complicate recovery in the event of data loss or cyber incidents.
Commvault said the new service provides a Commvault-managed S3-compatible endpoint, allowing organisations to route S3 data directly into isolated storage where security and retention policies are applied automatically. The approach is intended to simplify governance while reducing the risk of unauthorised changes or deletions.
Commvault’s chief technology and AI officer Pranay Ahlawat said the company was targeting developers and data teams that already use S3 as part of their workflows.
“For the first time, developers and data teams can write directly to a Commvault-managed S3 endpoint and gain encryption, immutability and policy control without added complexity,” Ahlawat said.
The service is positioned at a time when enterprises are storing growing volumes of data generated by cloud applications and AI systems, increasing the potential impact of misconfigured storage or ransomware attacks. Cyber incidents remain a leading operational risk for companies globally, according to multiple industry surveys.
Archana Venkatraman, senior research director at IDC, said organisations increasingly need stronger controls around large data sets used for AI and analytics.
“Unified Data Vault extends centralised automation and immutability to S3 data in a way that is accessible for developers while giving security and IT teams greater assurance around resilience,” she said.
Commvault said the service supports existing S3 workflows and application programming interfaces, enabling integration with current development and DevOps processes. The company added that the service applies consistent protection policies across different cloud environments and regions.
Unified Data Vault is currently available through an early access programme, with general availability expected sometime between March and May 2026. Commvault said the service would also be offered through its partner network, including managed service providers and cloud partners.
Commvault competes in a crowded market for enterprise data protection and cyber resilience software, where rivals such as Veeam, Rubrik and Cohesity also offer backup, recovery and ransomware protection services, including support for cloud-native and object storage environments.
