NEW — The National Testing Agency (NTA) has launched the registration process for the session, with applications open from October 7 to November 7, according to an official notification. The UGC NET exam serves as a key qualifying test for eligibility as research scholars, Assistant Professors, and PhD candidates across multiple disciplines.

The agency will open a correction window from November 10 to 12, allowing candidates to make modifications in their submitted applications. NTA has advised applicants to verify details carefully—particularly Aadhaar and Unique Disability ID (UDID) information—to prevent data mismatches later in the process.

Purpose and Scope of UGC NET

The National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is conducted twice a year to determine candidates’ eligibility for the following:

Application Fees and Eligibility

The application fees for UGC NET December 2025 are structured as follows:

  • General (Unreserved): ₹1,150

  • General-EWS / OBC-NCL: ₹600

  • SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender: ₹325

To be eligible, candidates must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject with at least 55% marks for the General category and 50% for reserved categories. Those currently in the final year of their Master’s programmes may also apply provisionally, subject to fulfilling academic requirements before the results are declared.

Correction Window, Admit Cards, and Exam Schedule

Once the registration period closes, NTA will open the correction window from November 10 to 12. During this phase, candidates can edit key details such as exam city preferences, subject selection, or personal data.

Admit cards and city intimation slips are expected to be released a few weeks before the exam. Although official dates are yet to be confirmed, previous patterns suggest that the UGC NET December 2025 exam may be held between January 1 and 19, 2026, conducted in two shifts daily.

The exam schedule, subject codes, number of questions, and marking schemes will be detailed in the official information bulletin once released.

Advisory and Verification

NTA has issued an advisory urging applicants to ensure their Aadhaar and UDID details are correctly entered to prevent mismatches that could delay verification. The agency has also recommended that candidates keep scanned copies of their documents and photographs ready in the prescribed format before starting the application process.

Applicants are advised to regularly check the official website for updates related to exam schedules, admit cards, and results.

Scale and Importance of the Examination

Each year, more than a million candidates register for the UGC NET, viewing it as a gateway to academic and research careers in India. It remains one of the largest national-level eligibility tests conducted by NTA.

In the June 2025 session, over 1 million candidates registered, with approximately 750,000 appearing for the exam. Notably, female participation accounted for nearly 58% of the total examinees. These figures underline both the growing interest in academic careers and the intense competition faced by applicants.

The test’s role in higher education is pivotal, as UGC NET qualification is often the minimum requirement for faculty recruitment and research fellowships in Indian universities and institutes.

Exam Structure and Evaluation

The UGC NET comprises two papers, both conducted in a single session of three hours:

  • Paper I: General aptitude and teaching/research skills (50 questions, 100 marks).

  • Paper II: Subject-specific questions (100 questions, 200 marks).

Both papers consist of multiple-choice questions, and there is no negative marking. Results are calculated using percentile scores to maintain fairness across multiple shifts.

Qualifying for the JRF requires higher percentile performance than for Assistant Professor eligibility. Cutoffs vary by subject, category, and the number of candidates.

Expected Schedule of Events After Registration

Following the correction window in mid-November, NTA will likely release the exam city slip in late December 2025, followed by admit cards shortly before the examination. After the tests, provisional answer keys will be published, allowing candidates to raise objections. The final results are expected around February or March 2026.

All official updates, notifications, and scorecards will be available exclusively on the UGC NET portal (ugcnet.nta.nic.in).

Challenges and Common Concerns

Candidates often face challenges such as:

  • Technical errors during registration due to heavy website traffic near the deadline.

  • Mismatch in documents, especially in name spelling or date of birth between Aadhaar and certificates.

  • Late corrections, which are not accepted after the official window closes.

  • Ambiguity in exam centres, as preferences depend on seat availability.

Applicants are advised to register early, maintain accurate records, and download the confirmation page for future reference.

Broader Context of UGC NET

The UGC NET, conducted since 1989, has evolved from a paper-based test to a fully computerised system. Administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) since 2018, it has seen major reforms in test administration, result standardisation, and grievance redressal.

Beyond its immediate academic purpose, the exam also provides critical data for higher education planning, subject demand forecasting, and research fellowships under various central schemes.

What Candidates Should Focus On

  1. Register early and verify all details before submission.

  2. Prepare as per syllabus and past trends, focusing on conceptual clarity.

  3. Follow official notifications only — avoid unofficial or social media updates.

  4. Stay updated on cutoffs and answer key release schedules.

With an estimated one million applicants competing for limited JRF and Assistant Professor positions, strategic preparation and strict adherence to official instructions will be key to success.

The launch of registration for the UGC NET December 2025 session marks another opportunity, offering scholars and aspiring faculty members a structured path into research and higher education. While the process remains largely similar to previous years, candidates must pay close attention to eligibility norms, correction timelines, and official updates to avoid procedural errors.

As the test continues to expand its and streamline operations, UGC NET remains one of the most significant academic qualification exams in the country.
