Every year about lakhs students appear for Bihar Board Intermediate Examination. The Bihar Examination Board conduct annual Secondary School Examination in the month of February/March and Supplementary School Examination in the month of August/September. It is the nodal agency for conducting exams and prescribing syllabus and recognising schools in Bihar.

Although BSEB have been trying hard to ensure free and fair examination but every year it is embroiled in some type of controversy. In recent past the board has been in the news for all wrong reasons. In 2016, a mega scam broke out leading to arrest of many senior officials including its chairman.

The scam popularly known as Bihar toppers scam came into limelight on 31 May 2016 when the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) and Humanities topper Ruby Rai, Science topper Saurabh Shrestha and third topper in Science stream Rahul Kumar were interviewed by television channels and they were unable to answer basic questions.

Ruby Rai, student of Vishun Roy College, Kiratpur Raja Ram village in Vaishali district pronounced Political Science as ‘Prodigal Science’ and described it as a subject related to cooking. Science topper Saurabh Shrestha was unaware of electron and proton and wrongly said that aluminium is the most reactive element.

In order to ensure that no negative reporting happens, in February 2017, Secretary of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), Anup Kumar Sinha had directed all the district magistrates and superintendent of police to keep the media out of the examination centers.

Apart from the Secondary School Examination, the Board also conducts departmental examinations such as Diploma in Physical Education, Certificate in Physical Education and Teachers Training Examination.
