Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were tied as the leading subscription streaming services in India during the second quarter of 2026, while Apple TV+ recorded the strongest year-on-year growth among the major platforms, according to data released by streaming guide JustWatch.
Netflix and Prime Video each accounted for 22 per cent of India’s subscription video-on-demand, or SVOD, engagement during the April-June quarter. They were followed by JioHotstar and Apple TV+, which were also tied, with a share of 18 per cent each.
Zee5 accounted for 9 per cent of the measured engagement, Sony LIV had 5 per cent and other streaming services collectively represented the remaining 6 per cent, the report said. The findings were based on more than 19 million streaming interactions recorded through the JustWatch website and applications in India across nearly 100 SVOD providers.
The data points to a tightening contest at the top of India’s streaming sector, with Netflix gaining ground over the past year even as Prime Video’s share declined marginally.
Netflix’s share remained unchanged between the first and second quarters of 2026, but increased by three percentage points compared with the corresponding quarter of 2025. Prime Video, by comparison, lost one percentage point during the latest quarter and was also down one percentage point from a year earlier.
The contrasting movement brought the two services level at 22 per cent each in the June quarter. JustWatch’s January-June trend chart also showed Prime Video gradually losing some of its early-year advantage while Netflix remained broadly stable during the latter part of the period.
Apple TV+ emerged as the fastest-growing major streaming service
Apple TV+ emerged as the fastest-growing major streaming service in JustWatch’s assessment. Its share rose by one percentage point during the second quarter and by four percentage points compared with the April-June period of 2025, taking it to 18 per cent.
The annual increase allowed Apple TV+ to draw level with JioHotstar, which experienced the steepest year-on-year decline among the platforms covered in the report.
JioHotstar’s share fell by one percentage point from the previous quarter and by seven percentage points from a year earlier. The platform nevertheless remained among the four largest services in the market, with an 18 per cent share of measured user interest.
The decline reflects changes in engagement measured through JustWatch and should not be interpreted as a direct estimate of subscriber losses. The report does not disclose paid subscriber numbers, revenue, viewing hours or average revenue per user for any of the streaming platforms.
In the middle segment, Zee5 maintained a 9 per cent share during the second quarter. Its position was unchanged from the January-March period, although it was down one percentage point year on year.
Sony LIV increased its share to 5 per cent, gaining one percentage point both sequentially and annually. Other streaming services collectively held steady at 6 per cent during the quarter and increased their combined share by one percentage point from the previous year.
The movements suggest that while Netflix and Prime Video continue to dominate measured streaming interest in India, competition is intensifying immediately below them. Apple TV+ has narrowed the gap with the two leaders, while JioHotstar’s decline has changed the composition of the top tier.
Netflix’s 22 per cent share was three percentage points higher than a year earlier, suggesting that the service strengthened its position without recording further sequential growth during the latest quarter. Prime Video remained a joint leader despite its quarterly and annual declines.
Apple TV+ was the only platform among the four largest services to record gains over both comparison periods. JioHotstar moved in the opposite direction, losing share on both a quarterly and annual basis.
JustWatch said its SVOD market-share estimates are calculated from user engagement on its website, television applications and mobile applications. The measured actions include adding a film or series to a watchlist, clicking through to a streaming service, filtering content by streaming provider and marking a title as already watched.
The Indian findings cover interactions recorded from April 1 to June 30, 2026. The figures were compared with the immediately preceding quarter and the corresponding three-month period of 2025.
The methodology means the percentages represent relative interest and engagement among JustWatch users rather than conventional market share calculated from subscriptions, revenue or total viewing time. The user base may also differ from the broader population of Indian streaming customers.
JustWatch said figures in the report had been rounded to the nearest whole percentage point. Changes of less than half a percentage point were classified as stable or unchanged, which means minor movements may not be visible in the published results.
Globally, JustWatch says its streaming charts draw on activity from more than 60 million film and television users each month. The company provides streaming availability and discovery information across 140 countries and about 4,500 streaming services.
The Berlin-headquartered company operates offices in cities including London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Munich and employs more than 200 people.
