The departure marks the end of an era for a company that fundamentally changed how people consume entertainment globally, including in where Netflix has operated since 2016.

The board transition comes as Netflix continues to expand its presence in markets outside the United States. In India, the platform competes with Disney+ , Amazon Prime Video and JioCinema for the country’s rapidly growing base of streaming viewers.

Hastings reflects on Netflix legacy

In a statement released by the company, Hastings highlighted the global expansion of Netflix as his most significant memory from his tenure.

“Netflix changed my life in so many ways, and my all-time favourite memory was January 2016, when we enabled nearly the entire planet to enjoy our service,” Hastings said.

That global launch, which brought Netflix to 130 new countries simultaneously including India, represented one of the largest single-day expansions in entertainment history. The move positioned Netflix ahead of traditional Hollywood studios in building an international streaming audience.

Hastings characterised his contribution to Netflix not as any single decision but as establishing the company’s distinctive corporate culture.

“My real contribution at Netflix wasn’t a single decision; was a focus on member joy, building a culture that others could inherit and improve, and building a company that could be both beloved by members and wildly successful for generations to come,” he said.

The board departure follows a leadership succession that began in 2020 when Hastings elevated Ted Sarandos to co-CEO. Greg Peters joined Sarandos as co-CEO in 2023, at which point Hastings moved to the executive chairman role.

Hastings thanked both executives in his statement, noting “whose commitment to Netflix’s greatness is so strong that I can now focus on new things.”

Hastings did not specify what he plans to pursue after leaving the board. He has previously been involved in philanthropic work focused on education reform in the United States.

From DVD rentals to streaming dominance

Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997 with Marc Randolph as a DVD rental-by-post service. The company’s pivot to streaming, which began in 2007, proved transformative for both Netflix and the broader entertainment industry.

Netflix launched its first original series, House of Cards, in 2013, establishing the model of releasing entire seasons simultaneously rather than weekly episodes. This approach, now standard across streaming platforms, changed viewer expectations for how television content is delivered.

The company also pioneered algorithmic recommendation systems, which use viewing data to suggest content to individual subscribers. This personalisation technology has since been adopted across the streaming industry.
