Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the establishment of three Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. These CoEs, part of India‘s larger efforts to advance in technology and innovation, were announced on Tuesday by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi responded to the announcement, calling it a significant step in India’s technological journey. “A very important stride in India’s effort to become a leader in tech, innovation and AI. I am confident these COEs will benefit our Yuva Shakti and contribute towards making India a hub for futuristic growth,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The three AI CoEs are aimed at fostering interdisciplinary research and developing cutting-edge solutions to address challenges in key sectors. The CoEs will be led by premier institutions—AIIMS and IIT Delhi in healthcare, IIT Ropar in agriculture, and IIT Kanpur for sustainable cities—with collaboration from industry partners and startups.
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision to position India as a global leader in AI, while creating opportunities for innovation, employment, and national development. The CoEs are part of the government’s broader mission to leverage technology for public good and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in his announcement of the CoEs, emphasised their role in advancing India’s credentials in AI and strengthening the startup ecosystem.
