Bangladesh Labour Department digitises trade unions to push transparency

: The Department of Labor has launched an online database to facilitate services, bring transparency in service and make all trade union information easily accessible to the general public.

Begum Mannujan Sufian said: “Inauguration of a publicly accessible database on trade unions added another feather to the success of building a digital Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

The state minister referred to the database as a gift from the Ministry of Labor and Employment on the occasion of the 75th birthday of the Prime Minister.

She said it is an innovative initiative of the Department of Labor. This database contains information on all trade unions registered by the Department of Labor across the country, information on rejected and registered trade unions, information on trade union cases, information on malpractice and arbitration, updated information on federations, selection, and participating committees.

Speaking as the special guest at the inauguration ceremony, the Secretary of the Ministry Md. Ehsane Elahi said that the amendment of Bangladesh Labor Rules, 2015 will be completed by next December.

It was informed that a user can use this website of the Department of Labor to view all the updated information from the database and print the report. The ‘Publicly Accessible Database’ will be open to the public and anyone can use the information here for various purposes such as personal and institutional work, research work, getting an idea about the labour environment of the country, etc. Note that the software has been done in both Bengali and English versions.

The event also saw the unveiling of the annual report of the department, the unveiling of the wrapper of the Labor Journal (Volume-36), the handing over of the draft amendment to the enacted labour laws and regulations, and the launch of the digital display board of the department.

‘Bangladesh Labor Journal’ is an annual publication with an informative account of the overall activities of the Department of Labor. The Department of Labor plays an important role in disrupting industrial production and protecting the rights of employers and workers by establishing harmony between employers and workers. A brief description and statistics of all the activities of this department are published in this journal. The main way to take a look at the overall activities of this year-based department is through the Labor Journal which is published every year.

A huge digital display board has been set up on the east side of Shram Bhaban to inform the public about all these developmental programs adopted and implemented by the in the field of labour in the country.

Through this, the public will be informed about Bangabandhu’s labour philosophy day and night, Bangabandhu’s speech at the workers’ meeting, development programs of the government for the welfare of the workers, services provided by various agencies of the Ministry of Labor including the Department of Labor.
