Bangladesh: Digital voucher fraud gang member arrested

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC )chief DIG Asaduzzaman said this at a press conference held at DMP Media Center on Sunday (August 8).

Dhaka: Law enforcers have arrested three people on charges of hacking the system of Supershop Shwapno and making and embezzling digital vouchers worth Tk18 lakh.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police () Counter Terrorism and Transnational (CTTC )chief DIG Asaduzzaman said this at a press conference held at DMP Media Center on Sunday (August 8).

A vigilante team of the Crime Investigation Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 3 members of the gang. The arrested are Mulhota Md. Nasimul Islam, Rehanur Hasan Rashed and Raisul Islam.

A large number of goods purchased through hacking 6 mobile sets, 2 laptops and 1 CPU, cryptocurrency, cash taka, electronic card and ‘Shwapno e-voucher were seized from them.

At the press conference, DIG Asaduzzaman said the arrested persons hacked the digital system of their supershop and sold digital vouchers worth Tk18 lakh to a few e-commerce users at a price of 25% through Facebook group.

“In this way, they swindle huge sums of money and deposit it in various cryptocurrency accounts.”

He also said: “cryptocurrency transactions worth Tk20 lakh were recovered from the seized digital devices.”

Shwapno executive director Sabbir Hassan Nasir said : “A criminal gang was doing this in an attempt to tarnish Shwapno reputation. Digital vouchers have also been circulated on social media with fake offers in the name of ‘Shwapno last month, including fraudulent sales. Shwapno lodged a complaint and a case with the police. When the ‘Shwapno authorities sought the cooperation of the cyber crime team, the cyber crime unit took cognizance of it and caught the criminals.”
