Dhaka — The progression of stopping illegal and refurbished handsets, all the existing handsets in the hands of the customers in the country will be automatically registered by June 30.
The telecommunications regulator Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has said it will give customers three months to report any of the new handsets that will be added to the network from July 1 if they become illegal.
The BTRC is starting the process of stopping illegal and counterfeit handsets in the country from July 1. All the used handsets in the hands of the customer will be automatically registered by June 30, so the customer does not have to do anything.
The BTRC has said that there will be no more problems after using these sets.
The activities of the National Equipment Identity Registrar (NEIR) will start on a trial basis from July 1. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of the mobile phone users of the customer's National Identification Number and SIM Number (MSISDN) will be registered with NEIR.
The new mobile phones that will be added to the network from July 1 will be kept active on the network and the validity of the handset will be verified through NEIR. If the handset is valid, it will be registered automatically.
And the handsets that do not have a valid IMEI number will be notified by SMS to the customer.
The BTRC director-general said the next step would be taken as per the decision of the government after keeping the set operational for three months.
Domestic company Synesis IT entered into an agreement with BTRC in December to stop illegal mobile sets and register legal sets. According to the agreement, they will launch the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system by July.
BTRC stated that once this process starts, no SIM will work on the illegal handset after three months. As a result, customers will be forced to stop using fake or illegal handsets.
