Dhaka — The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has set a new price for broadband internet across Bangladesh.
The Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar inaugurated the service at the BTRC auditorium in the capital on Sunday titled ‘One Country, One Rate’.
BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder presided over the function.
The maximum price of 5 Mbps broadband internet is set at Tk 500, 10 Mbps at Tk 700 to 800, and 20 Mbps at Tk 1100 to 1200.
Beyond the city, broadband internet has now reached the union level as well as the villages. Broadband internet subscribers are currently around one crore in the country.
The number of subscribers is 17 % of the total internet users in the country. But these customers use 58 % of the country’s total bandwidth.
The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications said the introduction of one-rate broadband internet across the country is an important milestone in building a digital Bangladesh.
Earlier we used to say we will take high-speed broadband internet at the union level. Now there is broadband internet at the union level. We will now reach broadband internet from city to rural and remote areas, he added.
However, in reality, the monthly bill is higher in rural areas than in urban areas. However, internet users of districts, Upazilas, and unions will benefit from such initiatives of BTRC.
This is also good news for city users. Prices vary in big cities including Dhaka and Chittagong.
The price of a particular package has to be calculated more or less depending on the area. Internet service providers say that the price package for broadband internet in Dhaka will be reduced from Tk 100 to Tk 200 per month.
