Huawei set up SDN Innovation Lab at IIIT Bangalore

Equipped with SDN software stack and related network elements hardware, the SDN innovation lab will provide the students of IIIT-B a platform to learn traditional telecom network solution

Technologies India, the research & development center of Huawei, and () Bangalore inaugurated the Huawei Innovation Lab at the IIIT Bangalore campus, on Monday. The innovation lab has been funded by Chinese firm as a part of its ICT industry ecosystem development initiative under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, and will focus on research activities in the area of software defined networks (SDN).

Equipped with SDN software stack and related network elements hardware, the SDN innovation lab will provide the students of IIIT Bangalore a platform to learn traditional telecom network solution and understand key challenges in enabling agile services in the networks, learn SDN controllers and re-architect the traditional network, innovate and develop applications like BoD (Bandwidth on Demand), VPN (Virtual Private Network), IoT network provisioning, etc using SDN controller, said telecom gear maker.

Apart from funding the lab, Huawei will also provide periodic guidance and mentoring to the students of IIIT-B on the research topics. Prof. S Sadagopan, Founder-Director of IIIT-B said “IIITB is proud to host the SDN Innovation Lab, with the support of Huawei Technologies India. SDN is an emerging technology with world-wide interest and potential application. Proof-of-concept projects leveraging SDN are now being evaluated at many organisations. I am confident that our students will benefit immensely from this state-of-the-art infrastructure at IIIT Bangalore and will contribute to the worldwide adoption”.

“ICT is converging at an increasingly rapid pace. New technologies are becoming key enablers for ICT innovation and development. We are very happy to partner with IIIT-B in setting up the SDN innovation lab, which is the first of its kind in the academic domain, and is expected to undertake some pioneering research activities in the telecom networking technology area. The students will gain deeper knowledge and understanding of the future-oriented technologies at this full-fledged SDN lab,” said William Zhao, CEO of Huawei Technologies India.
