Huawei’s HongMeng Kernel has achieved the Evaluation Assurance Level 6 Augmented (EAL6+) certificate under the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CC), marking it as the highest security level granted for general-purpose operating system (OS) kernels. This milestone places Huawei as the inaugural smart device maker to secure such a certification in this sector, said the company.
OS kernels form the bedrock of OS security and privacy mechanisms. The CC, also denoted as the ISO/IEC 15408 standard, stands as a paramount information security certification and is globally recognized within the IT industry for product security assessment.
The evaluation of the HongMeng Kernel was conducted by SGS Brightsight, a security evaluation lab. Kai-Fan Chang, COO Asia, SGS Brightsight, said on the lab’s findings, highlighting the Kernel’s compatibility with the international Common Criteria EAL6+ standards and predicting its influential role in upcoming Huawei products.
