Bringing a new level of flexibility and ease of use for medium-telephoto macro photography, Japanes firm Panasonic has launched the LUMIX S 100mm F2.8 MACRO (S-E100) lens.

Designed to be compatible with L-Mount system cameras from Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica, it is notable for its compact size, weighing approximately 298 grams, and its advanced features.

The lens's minimalist design includes a broad, rubberised manual focus ring and a switch to alternate between automatic and manual focusing modes, enhancing its utility in macro photography.

The Dual Phase Linear Motor in the lens significantly improves autofocus performance, showing minimal hunting in various lighting conditions.

This feature is particularly effective on cameras such as the Panasonic S5IIX and S1R. Despite not having physical endpoints, the manual focus system is user-friendly.

Performance and User Experience

In terms of performance, the lens operates quietly, making it suitable for both videography and candid photography. It lacks built-in Image Stabilisation but complements the stabilisation systems found in compatible bodies.

The lens is robustly built, offering dust and splash resistance, and remains functional in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for diverse outdoor conditions.

Optical Features and Design

Optically, the lens consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses, 2 UED lenses, and 1 ED lens. The aperture of F2.8 allows for effective low light performance and the creation of pleasing bokeh, supported by a 9-blade diaphragm.

The lens provides a life-size 1:1 magnification ratio and a minimum focusing distance of 20.4cm, making it suitable for detailed macro photography.

Pricing and Build Quality

Priced at £999 in the UK and €1099 in Europe, the lens is likely to cost between Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,10,000 in India. The Panasonic Lumix S 100mm F2.8 Macro lens offers a balance of compactness, lightness (298g, 82.0mm in length), and durability.

The design is predominantly plastic, yet it exudes a sense of durability with its weather-proof features.

Usability and Accessories

The lens is equipped with straightforward controls, such as a focus mode switch and a focus range limiter, which help minimise focus hunting. The autofocus system is quick and quiet, further enhancing the lens's suitability for various types of photography and videography.

Accessories include a high-quality plastic lens hood, and the lens's 100mm focal length provides a 24° angle of view. Chromatic aberrations are minimal, and vignetting and barrel distortion are well-controlled.

The macro capability of the lens is strong, offering a maximum magnification of 1.0x. The bokeh effect is generally pleasing, though this can vary based on individual preferences.

Estimated Price: Priced Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,10,000 (Buy Panasonic Lumix S 100mm F28 Macro Lens on Amazon)
