According to the report, aware of the new Google move, WhatsApp is already working on a new storage mechanism section. The new section will allow users to manage the backup size.

The new section will exclude specific media to be included in the next backup. The exact reason why WhatsApp is developing this feature is still not known.

But the report claims that there is a good chance WhatsApp backups on Google Drive will count as storage quota again. With the new feature, the social messaging app plans to offer some options to its users to manage the backup size.

In case you don’t remember, WhatsApp backups were a part of the Google Drive storage quota initially. But it changed in 2018 when the Facebook-owned platform partnered with Google to offer WhatsApp backups on Google Drive independent of the storage quota.

WhatsApp backups are tied to the phone number and Google they were created on. It must be noted that WhatsApp backups that haven’t been updated in more than one year are automatically removed from Google Drive.
