IBM to set up software lab in Kerala

Months after opening its new office in Kochi amid the spun-off of its ‘managed infrastructure services’ as an independent new company named Kyndryl, a senior executive of the International Business Machines Corp () in India said that they are now working to set up a Software Lab in Kochi.

The expansion of IBM Software Labs’ operations in Kerala will include establishing a product engineering, design and center in Kochi. According to Gaurav Sharma – Vice President, IBM India Software Labs, this center will focus on developing solutions, infusing global design techniques and advanced technologies including automation, data and artificial intelligence (AI), and security to support the requirements of the government and global customers.

In an online meeting held between senior executives of IBM India and Kerala’s chief minister , the company emphasised that it is committed to furthering the country’s vision of and its expansion in Kerala would provide them access to world-class skills and diversity of talent offered by the state.

Expansion in Kerala would provide us access to world-class skills and diversity of talent, drive skills development and enhance employability,” said Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India.

“Kerala is a talent hub for IT professionals and entrepreneurs, and we are pleased with IBM’s proposed expansion in the state. Technology Development Centers play an important role in driving economic growth by bringing innovations to the market quickly,” said Kerala CM Vijayan, adding that the government will extend full support to IBM to establish its software development center in Kerala.

“I’m confident that our talent and IBM’s leading technologies will have a far-reaching impact which will create employment opportunities, accelerate digital innovation and provide a strong foundation for the IT/ITeS sector in the state,” the chief minister said.

Last month, IBM had launched its new office in Kochi. The company has also roped in Lingraju Sawkar as the first Kyndryl president for India operations. Currently, IBM Software Labs operate from Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai in India.

IBM has a huge focus on research and development. The company runs four parallel research organisations which include IBM Software Labs, IBM Research Labs, IBM Global Technology Services Labs and IBM Hardware Labs.
