GitHub elevates Thomas Dohmke as new CEO

Dohmke, who is currently chief product officer, will succeed Nat Friedman as Chairman Emeritus on November 15.

Microsoft-owned open-source developer platform GitHub has appointed Thomas Dohmke as CEO. Dohmke, who is currently chief product officer, will succeed Nat Friedman as Chairman Emeritus on November 15, said the company. He joined GitHub in 2018 after collaborating with Friedman on Microsoft’s acquisition.

“As Chief Product Officer, I’m proud of the work our teams have done to bring new capabilities to GitHub Codespaces, Issues, Copilot, and many of the 20,000 improvements that we shipped last year,” Dohmke said in a blog post.

“We will always support developers in their choice of any language, license, tool, platform, or ,” Dohmke said.

On GitHub, over 73 million developers are currently working on various projects. By 2020, over 1.8 million developers in India will have joined GitHub, bringing the country’s developer community to over 5.8 million.

According to Friedman, the company serves 84% of the Fortune 100, “and our business has grown year after year since the acquisition.”

Several companies, including Infosys, InMobi, Udaan, ShareChat, Capillary Technologies, Swiggy, and ArisGlobal, have chosen GitHub to collaborate and build the that powers their businesses.

Microsoft acquired GitHub in June 2018 for $7.5 billion in stock. GitHub is a popular code repository service used by many developers and large companies.

“I am indebted to Satya Nadella and Scott Guthrie for their support of the GitHub team, belief in the platform’s power, and mentorship,” Friedman stated.

“Development itself is moving to the cloud. AI is revolutionising the way we code. Software security is security. Open source permeates nearly every product — or physical. Developers are building the future as we type,” he added.
