Key Points
- Department of Rural Development hosting national AI workshop at Bharat Mandapam on 25 June
- Five thematic sessions cover governance, service delivery, infrastructure and livelihoods
- NITI Aayog and IndiaAI Mission to deliberate on scaling AI tools for rural areas
The Department of Rural Development will host a national workshop on leveraging artificial intelligence for rural development at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Thursday (25 June). The day-long event will bring together NITI Aayog, the IndiaAI Mission, technology companies, startups and academic institutions to discuss how AI can be applied to improve governance, welfare delivery and economic opportunities in rural India.
The workshop aims to identify AI applications that can be deployed across India’s rural areas, where more than 65 per cent of the country’s population resides. Discussions will focus on how machine learning and data analytics can make government programmes more efficient and ensure that welfare benefits reach intended recipients without leakages or delays.
Organisers said the event will assess the readiness of India’s data infrastructure for large-scale AI deployment in rural settings. This includes examining how existing digital systems can be connected to AI tools and what institutional changes may be required for nationwide adoption.
Five Thematic Sessions Planned
Technical discussions will be organised around five themes. The first session will examine how India’s Digital Public Infrastructure — the network of digital identity, payments and data systems that underpin services like Aadhaar and UPI — can be integrated with AI to modernise rural governance and administrative processes.
The second session will focus on using algorithmic models to improve welfare delivery. These are mathematical systems that can analyse data to identify eligible beneficiaries, detect fraud and ensure that social protection schemes reach rural citizens more effectively.
A third session will address rural infrastructure and climate resilience. Discussions will cover how predictive technologies can help manage public works projects, track the condition of rural assets and prepare communities for climate-related risks such as floods and droughts.
The fourth session will examine AI applications in rural livelihoods and financial services. This includes using technology to strengthen village enterprises, provide skills training to rural youth and expand access to credit and insurance in areas where traditional banking infrastructure is limited.
The final session will address responsible AI governance, covering data privacy protections, ethical frameworks for AI deployment and policy measures needed to scale AI-based programmes across rural India without compromising citizen rights.
Participation from Government and Industry
The workshop will feature panel discussions with domain experts, policymakers and technology innovators. Representatives from NITI Aayog and the IndiaAI Mission will share perspectives alongside participants from academic institutions and deep-tech startups working on rural applications.
Speakers are expected to present case studies from pilot projects that have tested AI solutions at the village level. The Department of Rural Development said that insights from the workshop will contribute to developing a policy roadmap for integrating AI tools into India’s rural development programmes.
The event comes as the government seeks to extend the benefits of India’s digital infrastructure beyond urban centres. Rural areas have seen significant growth in internet connectivity and smartphone adoption in recent years, creating new possibilities for technology-driven service delivery.
The workshop is scheduled to run throughout 25 June at Bharat Mandapam, the convention centre at Pragati Maidan that has hosted several major government events since its inauguration in 2023.
