India Post delivered the national flag by drone for the first time on Saturday (14 August), flying the Tiranga from Mandi Head Post Office to Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
The delivery marks the Department of Posts’ first use of drone technology for parcel transmission and signals a broader plan to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles across difficult terrain where conventional transport faces challenges. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, inaugurated the initiative virtually.
The minister witnessed the live drone take-off from Mandi and interacted with postal officials and the drone operator. At Rehardhar, the postal team received the parcel and handed the flag to an army veteran, who was the designated recipient for the ceremonial delivery.
“The journey of the Tiranga through the skies of Himachal Pradesh represents the spirit of a new India that is determined to overcome geographical barriers and reach every citizen,” Scindia said.
Drone routes planned
The Department of Posts has identified 150 routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam for drone-based mail transmission. Both states have significant populations in remote and mountainous areas where road connectivity remains limited, making last-mile postal delivery slow and resource-intensive.
Drone delivery systems use unmanned aerial vehicles, remotely piloted aircraft that can carry small payloads over distances of several kilometres without requiring road infrastructure. In hilly terrain, drones can complete deliveries in minutes that would otherwise take hours by road or foot.
The Mandi to Rehardhar route demonstrates the technology’s potential for connecting branch post offices in areas where conventional logistics face challenges. Branch post offices in remote locations often receive mail through intermediary sorting offices, adding delays to delivery timelines.
Har Ghar Tiranga
India Post is participating in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign by making the national flag available for delivery across the country. The campaign, now in its third year, encourages citizens to display the Tiranga at their homes during Independence Day.
The minister said the Independence Day this year carries added significance as India commemorates 150 years of Vande Mataram. He said the flag should be in every home and in the hearts of every citizen.
The Department of Posts operates the country’s largest postal network, with over 1.5 lakh post offices serving urban and rural areas. Its physical reach into remote locations makes it a natural candidate for testing drone-based logistics, which could eventually extend to medicine delivery, financial services documentation and government benefit disbursements.
