Aadhaar’s face authentication service recorded its highest monthly usage in July 2025 with 19.36 crore transactions, a sharp rise from 5.77 crore in the same month last year, according to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The figures represent a 235% year-on-year jump and a 22% increase over June, highlighting growing adoption across both public and private sectors.

July also saw the highest single-day record for face authentication with over 1.22 crore transactions on 1 July 2025. The previous peak of 1.07 crore was registered on 1 March 2025. UIDAI said more than 150 entities, including government departments, institutions, oil marketing companies and telecom service providers, are using the AI-based solution which works on both Android and iOS platforms.

The technology has been integrated into the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), enabling 13.66 lakh beneficiaries in July to receive social security payments securely and without physical contact. It is also in use at all 850 medical colleges under the National Medical Commission for attendance marking, and by recruitment bodies such as the Staff Selection Commission and Railway Recruitment Board for candidate verification.

Overall, UIDAI processed 221 crore Aadhaar authentication transactions in July, a 3.8% increase from last year. Officials said Aadhaar-based authentication is increasingly becoming a key enabler for welfare as well as for citizens voluntarily accessing commercial and financial services.

In the same month, 39.56 crore electronic Know Your Customer () transactions were completed. UIDAI said e-KYC is playing a significant role in simplifying customer onboarding, cutting paperwork and reducing turnaround times in banking, non-banking finance and other regulated sectors.

The system has also been adopted by fintech firms and microfinance institutions to extend services to remote and underserved areas, supporting financial inclusion objectives. By reducing identity fraud and enabling instant verification, e-KYC is seen as a critical tool for both improving service delivery and strengthening compliance frameworks.

Experts note that rising biometric authentication volumes could improve service delivery efficiency but also raise questions around privacy and security. UIDAI maintains that biometric data is encrypted and subject to strict privacy safeguards.
