The FIFA World Cup 2026 changed how the world used the Internet during June and July, with Argentina’s quarterfinal against Switzerland causing larger traffic shifts globally than the tournament final, according to data from delivery network .

The company, which operates a global network with more than 330 points of presence worldwide, tracked HTTP traffic patterns throughout the tournament to measure how matches affected online behaviour across countries.

The findings reveal that match timing, streaming habits and team popularity all influenced whether Internet traffic rose or fell during games.

Kickoff time determined traffic patterns

The largest changes in Internet activity occurred when matches were played between midnight and 8am local time. During these hours, when few people are normally online, fans staying up late or waking early pushed traffic well above normal levels — more than doubling it in some cases.

Matches played during normal daytime hours showed little impact because viewers would have been online regardless. Early evening matches kept people connected at times when usage would normally decline.

When Brazil played Japan in the Round of 32 on 29 June 2026 — a match Brazil won 2-1 — the contrast was stark. The kickoff fell during normal waking hours in Rio de Janeiro but landed in the early morning in Tokyo, twelve hours apart. Japan’s traffic ran roughly double its usual level, while Brazil’s traffic dropped to about 60 per cent of normal as fans put devices aside to watch.

Bosnia and Herzegovina provided another example. When Bosnia played at 2am local time, traffic during the game more than doubled. When they played in the evening, traffic dipped to about 70 per cent of typical levels as viewers focused on the match itself.

Which matches moved the Internet most

To rank matches by global impact, Cloudflare measured how far traffic strayed from normal across all countries with sufficient baseline data during the two-hour window after each kickoff. The company used the median of absolute deviations — counting both surges and drops as impact — to compare matches.

The highest-impact match was not the final or semifinal. Argentina’s 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Switzerland on 11 July moved Internet traffic by a factor of about 1.26, putting it ahead of the France versus Spain semifinal at 1.21. Other high-impact matches included quarterfinals, round-of-16 and round-of-32 ties.

When measuring which teams the world watched most, Argentina topped the list. When Argentina played, the typical country’s traffic swung about 17 per cent away from normal levels — the strongest global pull of any team. The defending champions, with each knockout match potentially being Lionel Messi’s final World Cup appearance, commanded attention regardless of whether viewers supported them.

France, Brazil, Portugal, Morocco, Spain and Norway followed, with Norway’s presence driven by interest in striker Erling Haaland. Haiti and Iraq appeared in the top rankings as outliers, their high deviation scores relative to typical traffic suggesting matches against major teams drove disproportionate engagement in those countries.

Sports betting traffic rose sharply

Compared to traffic in the month before the tournament, requests to gambling websites increased after the opening game. Before the tournament, traffic to these sites followed a clear weekly pattern. After the Cup began, the trend flattened into a more constant profile, likely reflecting the near-daily schedule of matches.

Streaming habits split countries into clusters

Cloudflare identified three distinct patterns in how countries behaved during matches by grouping traffic curves by shape. The largest group — 44 countries across 101 matches — showed Internet usage rising during hydration breaks and halftime as people reached for their phones during natural pauses in play.

A second, smaller group of eight countries across 18 matches showed the opposite: traffic fell during breaks instead of climbing. This group included Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt and DR Congo.

To understand this second pattern, Cloudflare analysed traffic by content type using MIME types — labels that identify what kind of file a browser is receiving, whether an HTML page, an image or a video stream. The analysis found that countries in this group were disproportionately watching matches via streaming services.

In Algeria’s match against Austria, streaming traffic drove the bulk of the increase during the game. Algeria’s traffic rose sharply at kickoff, dropped during halftime, and returned to elevated levels once the second half began. Hydration breaks had little visible effect, suggesting viewers did not change their behaviour for three-minute pauses but did step away during the fifteen-minute halftime interval.

A viewer is unlikely to close a stream for a brief cooling break but a fifteen-minute halftime is long enough to close the stream and step away, the company noted. Austria, where streaming services were used less, showed the opposite pattern — traffic increased at halftime as viewers picked up their devices.

Iran’s three matches formed a third, distinct cluster. The explanation was straightforward: Cloudflare’s May baseline was measured while Iran was still recovering from an Internet shutdown, so its match-day traffic sat far above that depressed reference, producing a deviation unlike any other country.
