Key Points

  • US Energy Department commits $1.9 billion to 31 grid projects across 26 states
  • Investment aims to free up 20 gigawatts of capacity without new power plants
  • Data centre demand straining existing US power infrastructure

The US Department of Energy is investing $1.9 billion in 31 grid modernisation projects across 26 states, with combined public and private funding exceeding $5 billion. The initiative aims to free up more than 20 gigawatts of additional capacity from existing infrastructure without constructing new power plants.

The announcement comes as American electricity demand rises after years of stagnation, driven substantially by the expansion of centres and artificial intelligence workloads. The gap between power demand and available supply has become a growing concern for policymakers and technology companies alike.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the investments would enable the grid to move more electricity using existing infrastructure. The projects will rebuild or rewire more than 1,500 miles of power lines and deploy new grid technology across nearly 21,000 additional miles, serving approximately 100 million Americans, according to the department.

Grid constraints

The speed mismatch between technology deployment and power infrastructure expansion has emerged as a critical bottleneck. Data centres can be constructed in months, while power lines, generation facilities and heavy grid equipment typically require years of permitting and construction.

The constraints have prompted some industry observers to consider alternative approaches. James Altucher, a hedge fund manager and technology commentator, has argued that conventional grid expansion cannot keep pace with projected AI infrastructure requirements. He has pointed to regulatory resistance as a compounding factor, citing more than 300 bills filed across 30 states that would slow development.

Altucher has claimed, without providing independent verification, that proposed data centre projects worth $98 billion have been blocked by local opposition. He has suggested that SpaceX, the rocket company founded by , may be pursuing space-based computing infrastructure as an alternative to terrestrial data centres.

In a presentation promoting his thesis, Altucher cited a SpaceX filing with the Federal Communications Commission as evidence that Musk is seeking spectrum allocations for what Altucher described as a planned fleet of one million satellites with AI processing capabilities. These claims could not be independently verified.

Altucher has suggested that space-based infrastructure would avoid the permitting challenges and community opposition facing terrestrial data centres. He has also claimed that an unnamed supplier has produced more than five billion chips for Musk’s companies, though he did not identify the supplier or provide documentation for this figure.

The technical feasibility of large-scale space-based computing remains unproven. Launch costs, radiation exposure, thermal management and communications latency present significant engineering challenges that have not been publicly addressed by SpaceX.

The Energy Department’s grid modernisation initiative symbolises a more conventional approach to addressing power constraints. The projects will focus on transmission upgrades, advanced grid monitoring and improved capacity utilisation across existing infrastructure.

Your Questions, Answered
