Intel has appointed Alex Katouzian, a former Qualcomm executive, to lead its client computing and physical AI division, as the chipmaker reshapes its leadership team under chief executive Lip-Bu Tan.
Katouzian will join Intel in May as executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing and Physical AI Group. The company also confirmed Pushkar Ranade as chief technology officer, making permanent an interim appointment.
The appointments come as Intel works to regain ground against rivals AMD and Nvidia in the artificial intelligence chip market. Tan, who took charge as CEO earlier this year, has been restructuring the company’s operations and leadership.
Katouzian’s Role at Intel
At Qualcomm Technologies, Katouzian served as executive vice president and group general manager overseeing mobile computing, personal computers and extended reality products. His new role at Intel will focus on connecting the company’s personal computer business with what the industry calls physical AI — artificial intelligence systems embedded in robots, autonomous machines and other hardware that operates in the real world rather than in data centres.
Physical AI differs from cloud-based AI systems in that it processes data locally on the device, a capability known as edge computing. This approach reduces the delay between input and response, which is critical for applications such as self-driving vehicles and industrial robots.
“AI is creating unprecedented opportunities at the edge, driving a sea change in client computing and physical AI systems,” Tan said. “Alex brings deep technical expertise, strong operational discipline, and decades of experience building and scaling global compute platforms.”
Katouzian said he was joining Intel at a “critical moment” for the company. “Intel is creating the foundation for AI-driven transformation, from leading in AI PCs, to scaling AI inference at the edge, and accelerating the future of physical AI systems,” he said.
Ranade Takes Permanent CTO Role
Ranade, who has been serving as interim CTO, will now hold the position permanently. As chief technology officer, he will oversee Intel’s research into emerging technologies including quantum computing, neuromorphic computing — a field that designs chips modelled on the human brain — photonics, which uses light instead of electrical signals to transmit data, and new materials for chip manufacturing.
Ranade will continue as chief of staff to Tan, a dual role the company said would ensure alignment between its technology strategy and business priorities. Both Katouzian and Ranade will report directly to the CEO.
Intel’s share of the PC processor market, once dominant, has faced sustained pressure from AMD. In the data centre and AI training market, Nvidia holds a commanding position. The leadership changes signal Tan’s efforts to refocus the company on areas where it can compete, including AI-capable personal computers and edge computing devices.
