Dhaka: The High Court has adjourned the hearing of the writ petition for two months to ensure quality network system by resolving the problem of weak mobile phone network and slow internet.
The court said: mobile operators need to address network issues. Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah High Court bench passed the order on Sunday.
At the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan raised the issue of network problems in court.
Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Russell Chowdhury said they have informed the court about their activities to solve the network problem in the written reply of BTRC.
The BTRC said it was working to resolve the network issue. The High Court then said that mobile operators have to solve network problems. Network not available in remote areas.
The court told the petitioner’s lawyers that if the network problem was not resolved within two months, it would mention it to the court. The petition will then come up again for hearing.
On June 8, a writ petition was filed in the High Court challenging the inaction of the authorities to ensure a quality compliant network system by resolving the problem of a weak network of mobile phones and slow speed of internet. Rite has sought guidance to provide customers with internationally recognized internet speed services.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, president of the Consumers Association, Mehedi Hasan Dalim, a member of the Law Reporters Forum, and Md. Mohd. Advocate Ishrat Hasan filed the writ petition on behalf of Rashidul Hasan.
The information, communication, and technology secretary, BTRC chairman Grameenphone and the chief executives of mobile companies have been sued in the writ petition.
According to the writ petition, mobile phone subscribers are suffering due to weak networks and the slow speed of the internet. The quality of service is disappointing compared to the amount charged from the customer.
Although the number of mobile phone and internet users has increased rapidly, the mobile phone companies have not provided services accordingly, resulting in the suffering of the customers.
According to a 2020 survey, Bangladesh is at the bottom of the list of countries that ensure the quality of digital services. Ishrat Hasan, a lawyer for the petitioners, said the country’s internet speed was so weak that people in many places were being deprived of internet services.
The money we used to buy the net cannot be used when it expires. However, one of the reasons for not being able to use it at a certain time is slowness. Five and a half lakh complaints are lodged in BTRC every year, but customers are still suffering.
