John Ternus is chief executive officer of Apple Inc. and a member of the company’s board of directors. He assumed the CEO role on 1 September 2026, succeeding Tim Cook, who transitioned to executive chairman. Ternus spent over two decades at Apple before taking the top position, most recently serving as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, where he oversaw the design and development of the company’s product lineup. In that capacity, he played a senior role in the development of products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. Prior to his hardware engineering leadership, Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001. Before Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
