India’s Ayushman Bharat Health Account programme has crossed 90 crore registrations, the National Health Authority announced, marking the largest rollout of digital health identities in the country’s healthcare sector.
ABHA is a 14-digit unique identifier that allows citizens to link, access and share their medical records digitally with their consent. The system forms a core component of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to create a unified digital infrastructure connecting patients, healthcare providers and medical facilities across the country.
The digital health identity enables what is termed a longitudinal health record — a continuous medical history that follows a patient across different hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres, reducing dependence on physical documents and paper prescriptions.
Growth trajectory since 2021
ABHA registrations have grown consistently since the programme’s launch. Cumulative accounts rose from 14.7 crore in 2021 to 30.4 crore in 2022, 50.6 crore in 2023, 72.2 crore in 2024 and 84.5 crore in 2025, before crossing the 90 crore mark in 2026.
“The creation of over 90 crore ABHAs reflects the growing participation of citizens, States, UTs and ecosystem partners in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission,” said Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO, National Health Authority.
“ABHA will enable continuity of care, reduce dependence on physical records and support a more transparent and citizen-centric healthcare delivery system,” he added.
State-wise distribution
Uttar Pradesh leads with over 15.3 crore ABHA registrations, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra with 7.1 crore each, Bihar with 6.3 crore and West Bengal with 5.9 crore accounts. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka have also recorded high adoption.
Several smaller Union Territories have achieved full saturation relative to their population, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Among larger states, Andhra Pradesh has recorded 98.5 per cent ABHA saturation, followed by Odisha at 91.9 per cent, Chandigarh at 90.8 per cent, Rajasthan at 89.7 per cent, Himachal Pradesh at 88.9 per cent and Chhattisgarh at 86.6 per cent. Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura and Telangana have achieved saturation levels exceeding 75 per cent.
Women account for nearly half of registrations
Women constitute 49.75 per cent of total ABHA holders, the NHA said. The digital identity is designed to support continuity of care from the first point of contact with the health system, including maternal and child healthcare and immunisation services.

The rollout has been enabled through collaboration between the Centre, state governments, healthcare providers and private-sector partners. ABDM-enabled health technology platforms, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, insurers and digital health applications have expanded ABHA creation through multiple registration channels.
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is implemented by the National Health Authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The mission’s digital infrastructure includes the Healthcare Professionals Registry and Health Facility Registry alongside ABHA.
