STMicroelectronics has launched the STM32U0 series, a new line of designed to enhance energy efficiency in electronics. The new series claims to reduce energy consumption by up to 50% compared to its predecessors, potentially leading to less frequent battery replacements and a reduced environmental impact from discarded batteries.

These microcontrollers are integral to the functioning of smart sensors and actuators used in smart buildings and Internet of Things (IoT) , crucial for efficient energy and resource management. According to Patrick Aidoune, General Manager, STMicroelectronics, “The new STM32U0 microcontroller series takes this notion to a new level, building on our proven ultra-low-power technologies.”

The semiconductor company said that the STM32U0’s advanced design and manufacturing process allow it to remain in power-saving sleep modes longer, reducing average energy demand. This includes applications in industrial sensor management, where devices can reportedly operate twice as long on the same size battery.

In practical applications, the STM32U0 is being used in security cameras to activate upon motion detection, enhancing surveillance capabilities while conserving energy. Additionally, it supports long-lasting smoke detectors and water meters that aim for over a decade of battery life without maintenance, said the company.

Francesco Cerretani, Senior Developer, Ascoel, said: “We found that the STM32U0 was the perfect solution, supporting our goal to create a low-cost, ultra-low-power, easy-to-install, zero maintenance, precise water meter.”

The STM32U0 series also includes numerous analog peripherals and a segment LCD display controller that can help reduce costs and PCB space in devices like thermostats and factory automation panels. The microcontrollers feature up to 256KB of Flash memory, 81 options, and a 56MHz core speed.
