Microsoft and Oracle have announced an expansion of their collaborative efforts to push Oracle Database@Azure across various regions. As part of the partnership, now Oracle Database@Azure are being extended to five additional regions, increasing the total number of planned multicloud availability regions to 15 worldwide.
The move is expected to allow customers in Europe to access Oracle database services running on OCI hardware within Azure datacenters for the first time. The expansion reflects both companies’ shared goal of facilitating cloud migration for their customers, combining Oracle’s strengths with Microsoft‘s wide array of cloud services, said a statement.
“Bringing Oracle Database@Azure to Europe will enable customers in the region to locally employ Oracle database services running on OCI hardware deployed in Azure datacenters for the first time,” said Microsoft CVP Azure Infrastructure Product and Design Erin Chapple.
“The expansion of our collaboration with Oracle demonstrates our mutual commitment to help customers streamline the migration of workloads to the cloud so they can combine the best of Oracle with the breadth of Microsoft cloud services, like Azure AI, to empower business innovation,” Chapple added.
The service is now available in the Microsoft Azure Germany West Central region in Frankfurt, marking the first instance of Oracle Database@Azure’s availability in Europe, following its introduction in the Microsoft Azure East US region in December 2023. The company said that plans are in place to expand the service to additional regions globally throughout the year.
Oracle said it is adding five more regions to their roadmap, acknowledging the wide range of industries, from financial services to healthcare and manufacturing, that are utilising Oracle Database@Azure.
“We have embraced the tremendous global customer demand for Oracle Database@Azure and are hence announcing five additional regions to the road map today,” said Karan Batta, senior vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
The company claimed that the collaboration between Microsoft and Oracle offers customers a range of benefits, including flexible migration options for Oracle databases to the cloud, high performance, scale, and availability of Oracle databases, and simplified purchasing through the Azure Marketplace.
Oracle also emphasised that customers will gain from a unified support experience from both Oracle and Microsoft, ensuring a cohesive service architecture that leverages both companies’ expertise.
According to a senior executive, the initiative not only aims to simplify cloud migrations but also to provide a seamless and secure operating environment, consistent with on-premises Oracle Database and Oracle Exadata deployments, and to enable the development of new cloud-native applications utilising the combined technologies of OCI and Azure.
