VMware has unveiled the latest enhancements to VMware Cloud, focusing on modernization, optimization, and advanced security measures for its customers. These developments aim to facilitate faster innovation, efficient operations, and enhanced protection against security threats, including ransomware attacks, said company at its annual conference VMware Explore in Las Vegas.
VMware Cloud integrates VMware Cloud Foundation Software and VMware Cloud Services. This combination offers a cohesive environment across various platforms, such as on-premises, hyperscaler cloud, and partner cloud platforms. Through VMware Cloud, businesses can optimize app modernization with features like cloud-based recovery, multi-cloud networking, and additional developer services.
The cloud service offers five versions: Essentials, Standard, Pro, Advanced, and Enterprise. These cater to the diverse needs of businesses at different stages of their cloud adoption journey. VMware Cloud provides three deployment and management approaches:
- Customer Managed: Customers can deploy VMware Cloud in their own data centers or with colocation partners.
- VMware Managed: This includes VMware Cloud on AWS, which offers a combined hardware and software service. Also, VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal allows customers to opt for software and hardware separately.
- Provider Managed: Services like VMware Cross-Cloud are managed by partners like IBM Cloud. These services aim to optimize costs, simplify operations, and facilitate seamless cloud transitions.
Kojo Inkumsah, from First Citizens Bank, highlighted VMware Cloud’s role in supporting their multi-cloud approach, emphasizing its utility in integrating the systems of acquired banks seamlessly and securely.
A new service, VMware NSX+, was introduced, expanding on VMware’s strength in data center SDN. This service seeks to unify networking and security across VMware Cloud environments, ensuring consistency in security policies and offering advanced network visibility. NSX+ VPCs, also part of this introduction, grant isolation to various tenants on a shared VMware Cloud, ensuring safety and operational efficiency.
Furthermore, VMware introduced vSAN Max to address the growing needs for scalable storage solutions. This will offer customers increased scalability and efficiency, promising flexibility, high performance, and resilience at a competitive cost.
Kamran Amini from Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group commented on the continuous collaboration between Lenovo and VMware. He emphasized how combined solutions like ThinkAgile VX Appliances, with vSAN Max, can cater to the demands of modern databases and applications.
On the security front, VMware’s Ransomware Recovery service targets the increasing threat of fileless ransomware attacks. This service has showcased a significant reduction in unplanned downtime, up to 75%. Alaa Elbanna from VanEck spoke about the challenges of previous recovery processes, noting that VMware’s solution has streamlined and accelerated their response to such threats.
VMware also announced the early availability of a new cloud-based ESXi lifecycle management service in VMware vSphere+. This will simplify upgrade processes for IT admins, promising fewer operations, especially in larger environments. The forthcoming updates to vSphere will include enhanced support for AI/ML workloads, improved load balancing, and self-service tools to better cater to the needs of developers.
