US tech body seeks removal of trade barriers between India, EU

The United States-based Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) has sought for reduction of trade barriers for information and communication technology-related business between India and Europe.

This comes ahead of Prime Minister addressing the first meeting of India-EU leaders on Saturday.

“PM @narendramodi will participate in the India-EU Leaders' Meeting today. A momentous occasion, this will be the 1st such meeting of in EU+27 format where PM @narendramodi would collectively interact with all leaders of EU Members States. Here is a look at -relations,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson, tweeted.

ITI is a global industry body comprising technology giants including Intel, , Ericsson and . The demand comes after a meeting between top technology giants urging the EU stakeholders to seek a rather smooth trade process during the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders.

“We hope that the upcoming summit leads to renewed talks to eliminate trade barriers for information and communications technology goods and services, including through the reduction of barriers to digital trade and cross-border data flows,” ITI Country Manager (India) Kumar Deep said in a statement.

Prime Minister Modi will be interacting with the EU leaders in a virtual summit to discuss Covid-19 related issues and technology transfer for the vaccination programme.

“We urge the EU and India to commit to enhanced multilateral cooperation to find solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing the global economy, including climate change and technology solutions to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic,” Deep said.
