About
Mohd Ujaley is an Indian journalist and editor who has spent more than 15 years covering the intersection of technology, government, public policy and enterprise.
As Editorial Director of Tech Observer Magazine, he oversees the publication’s editorial strategy and coverage of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, enterprise technology, Digital India, defence technology, public sector transformation and technology policy.
Ujaley began his journalism career reporting on government and public administration. After an early newsroom stint with All India Radio, he joined Bureaucracy India magazine in 2010, covering central and state administration, the Department of Personnel and Training and the workings of the civil services.
He later worked with Elets Technomedia across its e-governance, education and healthcare publications, followed by 9.9 Media’s iGovernment, covering the use of technology across ministries, state governments and public sector organisations. His reporting from this period included interviews with senior civil servants involved in some of India’s early large-scale e-governance and infrastructure programmes.
Among them were India’s home secretary G K Pillai, Sanjay Jaju, then Secretary for Information Technology and Communications in Andhra Pradesh, on the Mee Seva public service delivery programme, and Pratyaya Amrit, then Secretary, Road Construction Department and Information & Public Relation Department, Government of Bihar on the use of technology, institutional reform and project monitoring in the state’s road infrastructure programme.
Ujaley subsequently joined the Indian Express Group, where he worked as Principal Correspondent and later Special Correspondent across The Financial Express, Express Computer and CRN India. His reporting covered government technology, enterprise IT, cybersecurity, cloud computing, digital infrastructure and the growing use of technology in public administration.
During this period, he interviewed Cisco Chairman and CEO Chuck Robbins on the company’s technology strategy, enterprise networking and India, and reported from major international technology conferences.
His government reporting included the Election Commission of India’s adoption of mobile applications and digital systems for election management. In 2017, he interviewed O.P. Rawat, then Election Commissioner of India and later Chief Election Commissioner, on the use of technology for monitoring elections, grievance redressal and coordination with officials in the field.
Ujaley later joined The Economic Times’ ETGovernment as Senior Special Correspondent and was subsequently promoted to Senior Assistant Editor. His remit covered the intersection of technology with government, public sector organisations, defence and large enterprises.
At ETGovernment, he reported on administrative reform, Digital India, cybersecurity, emerging technologies and public sector modernisation, while also conducting interviews and moderating discussions with ministers, secretaries, senior civil servants and technology executives.
His interviews included Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on the development of the North East, Article 370, reforms in bureaucracy and the use of technology in government. His work also brought him into conversation with senior policymakers and officials responsible for India’s digital infrastructure and public service delivery programmes.
Alongside reporting and editing, Ujaley became involved in The Economic Times’ government and technology forums, moderating discussions involving senior government officials, CIOs, CISOs and technology leaders. He also delivered the opening address at ETGovernment’s National Governance Summit, speaking on digital public infrastructure and the changing expectations of technology-led governance.
Ujaley joined Tech Observer Magazine as Editorial Director in August 2023.
At Tech Observer, he has continued to focus on the relationship between technology and institutions, with reporting and interviews spanning artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data infrastructure, digital governance, enterprise technology and defence.
His recent interviews have included Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, Governor of Uttarakhand, on technology, governance and the state’s development; Narain Karthikeyan, India’s first Formula One driver and an entrepreneur, on artificial intelligence, mobility and road safety; and Veeam CEO Anand Eswaran on AI, cybersecurity and enterprise resilience.
Through The Digital India Podcast and other Tech Observer formats, Ujaley interviews policymakers, technology executives, CIOs, CISOs, entrepreneurs and institutional leaders on the decisions shaping India’s digital economy.
Across his career, his reporting has followed technology from policy formulation and government procurement to enterprise adoption and implementation. His work has examined areas ranging from election technology and e-governance to cloud computing, cybersecurity, AI, digital public infrastructure and the modernisation of government and enterprise systems.
Ujaley holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. He is a recipient of a Parliamentary Fellowship from the Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, New Delhi, and has completed Certificate Programmes in Public Policy and International Relations at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
