Nokia showcases 3GPP-compliant Network Exposure Function for 5G Core

showcased its (NEF) for Core at Nokia's Research and Development center in Bengaluru on the center's Innovation Day. NEF will allow service providers to deliver an improved quality of experience for internet application and device provisioning, enabling a number of 5G use cases including Massive IoT, Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication and Enhanced Mobile Broadband. Nokia NEF will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2019.

Nokia NEF is based on the 5G specifications released by the 3GPP standardization body. It is a part of the 5G Core network function and securely exposes operators' assets to application developers in the enterprise and Over-The-Top (OTT) domain. Enabling new services and business models, it also allows service providers to boost revenues. At the same time, subscribers are also able to enjoy best-in-class applications.

Rupa Santosh, head of the Bangalore R&D Center at Nokia, said: “It is a proud moment for us, as NEF has been conceptualized at Nokia's Bengaluru R&D center and developed jointly with the Budapest R&D center. Our center is actively involved in the development of new technology approaches for state-of-the-art quality products, for which Nokia is known across the globe, and Nokia NEF is just one example of this work. We are committed to continue developing new and innovative products to help service providers meet various market challenges and maximize their investments.”

The annual Innovation Day event showcases Nokia's latest innovations and advances. It also brings together Nokia's partners from Bengaluru's technology ecosystem across academia, technology companies and start-ups. This year, Nokia demonstrated a wide spectrum of technologies under its event theme ‘5G is Now, Intelligent Machines that connect the Next Billion'. These included Nokia Drone Networks, Immersive Presence, Cloud Base Station, NB-IoT applications, Analytics, Machine Learning and more, demonstrating innovative ideas that will be vital in paving the way for the successful deployment of 5G in India by 2020.

STMicro quarterly profit declines by 18.4% owing to slow demand

European chipmaker STMicroelectronics reported net revenues of $3.47 billion, marking an 18.4% decline compared to the same period last year. This downturn was particularly noticeable in the automotive and industrial sectors, although gains in personal electronics provided some balance.
