Siemens offers digital transformation lab at IISc, inks pact to push tech innovations

In a technology leg up to Indian Institute of Science (), the global tech giant, Siemens has inked a pact with the Bengaluru based institute to establish a lab, and Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) and a smart manufacturing demo and development cell giving more impetus to the technology innovations at the institute.

The company has announced to have entered into two separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with IISc and CMTI. “The MoUs will focus on the development of Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 4.0-enabled products and technologies,” Siemens said in a statement.

According to Sunil Mathur, managing director and chief executive officer, Siemens, with digital transformation emerging as a priority across sectors, “premier educational institutions such as IISc and CMTI have a crucial role to play in equipping researchers and professionals with cutting-edge technology and expertise.”

The new tech push is also likely to provide exposure to the advanced software suite to students with the tech giant planning to deploy some of the best digitalisation tools and support to set up the lab at the institute.

“This support will give valuable experience and exposure to students and faculty with tools and technologies that are commonly used in the industry. It will help researchers and students to be better prepared for industrial jobs and on the other hand, excel in Academia-Industry collaboration by offering a platform for know-how sharing by enabling a common engineering environment that is familiar to both,” Amaresh Chakrabarti, head of smart factory at IISc and chair of its Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing said.

While praising the new , CMTI Director Dr Nagahanumaiah, said Siemens was equipping researchers and students with the best-in-class digitalisation tools, software and cloud platform, among others, through the set-up of the cell. “This will greatly help in promoting indigenous research and development especially in the areas of in the manufacturing industry,” Nagahanumaiah said.
