Centre fast-tracks 5G rollout, clears proposal to install 8 lakh new mobile towers

The proposal is in sync with the government deadline to fully switch to 5G technology across the country in the next two years.

With the Union government gearing to fast-track 5G trials for a full-fledged rollout of the high-speed 5G later this year, the Centre has cleared a proposal to bump up the telecom infrastructure across the country by adding as many as eight lakh new mobile towers.

According to the Union government, the proposal is in sync with the government deadline to fully switch to 5G across the country in the next two years.

The new proposed telecom infrastructure will be put in place over the next two years. The new eight lakh telecom towers — more than double the current strength — apart from ensuring that nearly three out of four are connected through an optical fibre to increase their data-carrying capacity.

According to top government sources, the proposal has already been discussed at the highest level including the Prime Minister’s Officer (PMO) and has received a go-.

As per reports the Centre is taking all necessary steps to ensure a vastly connected digital environment that can support new-age tech, such as those centred around the internet of things, augmented and casts, autonomous driving and smart home solutions.
