Bilateral investment between India and the United States has grown twelve-fold over the past two decades, rising from $20 billion to $240 billion, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said on Monday (18 August), calling the current moment a defining phase for economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce National Convention 2026 in Mumbai, Gor said that the two nations had broken several records in bilateral trade. He pointed to the scale of the American market as a significant opportunity for Indian businesses seeking global expansion.
“The decisions and collaborations initiated today and over the next few years would determine the direction of India-US relations for several decades,” Gor said.
He underlined President Donald Trump‘s trust in India and assured industry leaders that the US Embassy remained open to supporting deeper commercial engagement.
Maharashtra investment
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, attending as chief guest, highlighted the need to convert growing strategic alignment into tangible investments, technology partnerships, manufacturing opportunities and employment generation.
“Maharashtra is a $660 billion economy, growing at about 10.2 per cent CAGR for last seven years,” Fadnavis said. “About 69 per cent of our youth is 27 years of age and roughly 50 per cent is in K-12. If Maharashtra was a country, it would probably be in the top 20 countries in the world by its sheer economic promise.”
The chief minister announced that a 165-acre Medicity was being developed near the Mumbai airport, with the Cleveland Clinic signing on as an anchor hospital in the venture.
Fadnavis also said that with one of India’s strongest industrial and innovation ecosystems, the Maharashtra is expected to play a central role in the next phase of India-US economic engagement, offering opportunities across advanced manufacturing, digital technology, infrastructure, financial services, clean energy and emerging industries.
Uttar Pradesh showcases state potential
The Uttar Pradesh government also presented the state’s investment and export potential at the convention. Dinesh Pratap Singh, minister of state for horticulture, agricultural marketing and agricultural exports, said Uttar Pradesh’s size and population made it an economy of global significance. He highlighted the state government’s focus on religious tourism, aviation connectivity and export infrastructure.
