Kerala becomes first state to pass Digital University Act to promote digital technologies

The Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation, and Technology Act, 2021, has gone into effect, marking a significant step forward in the state’s journey toward . Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has signed the Bill, which was passed overwhelmingly by the Kerala Legislative Assembly last month, according to a university statement.

The Act sought to establish and incorporate non-affiliating research and teaching university in Kerala with the objective of facilitating and promoting studies, research, incubation, and knowledge expansion activities in the field of digital technologies and its application fields.

The Act, it stated, has resulted in the transformation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) into the Digital University Kerala.

The Governor’s address on January 22, 2018, stated the government’s intention to upgrade IIITM-K into a world-class centre for research and education in advanced technologies.

This was also stated in February 2018’s budget speech. Following this, in January 2020, the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation, and Technology ordinance was published.

The state government formally opened DUK at the Technocity campus in February this year to meet the growing demand for competent candidates for the .

The Digital University Kerala, which boasts a strong innovation cluster, cutting-edge facilities, and renowned faculty, has begun accepting for its master’s programmes in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber security, and the internet of things, the university said.

The DUK offers MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes that have been approved by the University Grants Commission.

Courses are offered through the university’s five schools: the School of Computer and Engineering, the Electronic Systems and Automation School, the Informatics School, the School of Digital Sciences and Digital Humanities, and the School of Liberal Arts.

It is home to a variety of innovation hubs and centres of excellence, including Maker Village, Kerala Blockchain Academy, the Centre of Excellence for Intelligent IoT Sensors, and thingQbator.

DUK’s courses are meant to enable students to comprehend and recognise real-world challenges, as well as provide innovative solutions, the statement stated.

The DUK campus in Technocity is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories and student housing.
