Editorial Standards

Tech Observer Magazine is a technology news magazine that covers the intersection of technology with government, public sector, defence and large enterprises across India and globally. Our reporting reaches CIOs, CISOs, civil servants, founders, investors and policy-makers who rely on us to be accurate, fair and useful. This page sets out the standards every member of our editorial team commits to.

Independence

Tech Observer Magazine is independently owned and editorially independent. Our editorial decisions are not influenced by advertisers, sponsors, partners or commercial interests. Sponsored content is clearly labelled as Brand Solutions, Partner Content or Sponsored, and is produced separately from our newsroom.

Accuracy

We aim to publish information that is accurate, verifiable and fairly presented.

  • Every news report is based on at least one source we have verified — official documents, on-record interviews, primary filings, or named statements.
  • Where a claim is in dispute, we attribute it clearly and seek comment from all parties named or affected.
  • We do not knowingly publish information we cannot stand behind. If we do not know something, we say so.
  • Numbers, dates, designations and company names are checked before publication. Where conversion is involved (foreign currency to rupees, for example), the rate and date are noted.

Sourcing

  • We prefer named, on-record sources. Anonymous sources are used only when the information is in the public interest, the source has direct knowledge, and the source faces a credible risk of harm or retaliation if named.
  • When we use anonymous sources, we describe the source’s position with as much specificity as is safe (“a senior official at the Ministry of Electronics and IT”, not just “sources said”).
  • We do not pay sources for information.
  • We disclose when material has been provided by a press release, a briefing, or a public-relations agency.

Use of artificial intelligence

We use AI tools to support our work — for transcription, translation, search, summarisation and copy-checking. We do not use AI tools to generate news reports, opinions or interviews that we publish under a journalist’s byline. Any article wholly produced with AI assistance will be labelled as such, with a named editor responsible for verification. We do not use AI to fabricate quotes, sources or imagery.

Conflicts of interest

Our journalists and editors disclose to the editor-in-chief any personal, financial or professional relationships that could create — or appear to create — a conflict of interest with what they cover. Where a conflict exists, the journalist either recuses themselves or the conflict is disclosed at the foot of the article.

We do not accept gifts, free travel, accommodation or entertainment from companies or sources we cover, beyond items of nominal value (a press kit, refreshments at a press conference). Where attendance at an industry event involves travel or accommodation paid by an organiser, we disclose this in any reporting that results.

Distinguishing news, analysis, opinion and sponsored content

Our content falls into clearly labelled categories:

  • News — factual reporting on what happened, attributed and verified.
  • Analysis — our journalist’s interpretation of what news means, drawing on reporting and expertise. Clearly marked as analysis.
  • Opinion — the author’s personal view. Bylined and labelled. Opinion pieces do not represent the position of Tech Observer Magazine.
  • Interviews — Q&A or feature-length interviews with named subjects. Quotes are accurate to what the subject said; light editing for length and clarity is permitted.
  • Brand Solutions / Sponsored — content produced for or with a commercial partner. Always labelled and visually distinct.

Photographs and imagery

  • We use photographs that we have taken, that we have licensed, or that we are entitled to use under fair use or a Creative Commons licence (with credit).
  • Stock images used as illustrations are labelled “Photo / File” or “Representative image”.
  • We do not alter the substantive content of photographs. Cropping, colour and exposure adjustments for clarity are acceptable; adding, removing or moving elements within the frame is not.
  • AI-generated illustrations, where used, are labelled “AI-generated illustration”.

Right of reply

Where we publish allegations or criticism of an individual or organisation, we offer them a fair opportunity to respond before publication. If a response is not received in time, we say so and update the article when a response arrives.

Plagiarism

We do not pass off another publication’s work as our own. We attribute facts and quotations to their original source, including for stories first reported by other publications. We do not republish substantial portions of others’ work without permission.

Bylines and accountability

Every Tech Observer Magazine article carries a byline — an individual journalist or, in the case of newsroom-collective work, “Tech Observer Desk”. Author profile pages link to the journalist’s other work, professional background and contact information.

The Editorial Director has overall responsibility for editorial standards. Concerns about a specific article should be raised via Complaint Redressal.
