Dhaka: The implementation of the country’s third submarine cable has started. The formal launch of Bangladesh’s accession to the third submarine cable began with the signing of a construction and maintenance agreement with the S-M-W6 consortium and the consortium’s suppliers to implement the much-anticipated third submarine cable project.
The Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar, who was present as the chief guest at a signing ceremony at a hotel in Dhaka on Thursday night to mark the signing of the agreement, announced the happy journey of this unique initiative to develop digital connectivity in the country. Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) organizes the event.
He said the third submarine cable would be launched by 2024. The Minister expressed his firm belief that the launch of this would be a revolutionary change in the development of digital connectivity in the country.
He said that S-M-W6 would make an unimaginable contribution to establishing uninterrupted connectivity with the digital world by meeting the growing demand for digital connectivity in the days to come.
The Minister described the third submarine cable connection as a historic milestone in the progress of building a digital Bangladesh.
BSCCL Managing Director Mashiur Rahman, Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications. Afzal Hossain, BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder, and S-M-W6 Project Director Kamal Ahmed spoke.
Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar described the submarine cable as one of the country’s most essential telecommunications infrastructure.
He said the then government withdrew the proposal of submarine cable connection in Bangladesh free of charge in 1992, leaving Bangladesh behind in the world of information technology for 14 years.
Bangladesh has not only overcome that backwardness with the Digital Bangladesh program announced in 2008 but is also providing high-speed broadband connectivity to every union in the country, including haors, islands, chars, and remote hilly areas.
He said only 8 Gbps internet was used in the country in 2008 and there were only 7 lakh users. Mustafa Jabbar, the promoter of Bangla language in computers, said that at present 110 million people in the country use the internet, and 2700 Gbps bandwidth is being used.
“The third submarine cable connection for Bangladesh is another historic achievement of Bangladesh in the world of digital technology,” he noted.
