Daraz, the Alibaba Group-owned online marketplace that describes itself as Bangladesh’s largest e-commerce platform, has completed seven years of operations in the country. The Dhaka-based company announced a week-long anniversary campaign running from 2 to 8 September 2021, offering discounts and promotional deals to customers.
The campaign, branded under the slogan #ThankYouBangladesh, includes offers such as mystery boxes, vouchers through a shake-to-win feature, deals with discounts of up to 7,000 taka, prepayment discounts and flash sales. Daraz announced the initiative through a digital press conference held on its official Facebook page on 26 August 2021.
Syed Mostahidal Hoq, managing director of Daraz Bangladesh Limited, said the platform had grown substantially since its launch. “The last seven years have been amazing and memorable for Daraz for various reasons. Cross-sections of people have showered love on us unconditionally, and we are now the most sought-after e-commerce platform in the country,” Hoq said.
Daraz operations
Daraz operates as an online marketplace connecting sellers with consumers across Bangladesh. The platform allows third-party vendors to list products ranging from electronics and fashion to groceries and household items, with Daraz handling the logistics infrastructure for deliveries. Customers place orders through the Daraz website or mobile application and pay either online or through cash on delivery.
The company is part of the Daraz Group, which Alibaba acquired in 2018. Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce conglomerate founded by Jack Ma, operates similar marketplace platforms across South Asia through the Daraz brand, including in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Myanmar. The acquisition brought Alibaba’s logistics technology and payment systems to these markets.
Bjarke Mikkelsen, group chief executive officer of Daraz, attended the digital press conference alongside other company executives including Md Tajdin Hassan, chief marketing officer, and Khondoker Tasfin Alam, chief operating officer.
Market position
Bangladesh’s e-commerce sector has expanded significantly over the past decade, driven by increasing internet penetration and smartphone adoption. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated online shopping adoption as consumers shifted to digital platforms during lockdowns and movement restrictions. Multiple platforms now compete for market share in the country, including Evaly, Chaldal and various social commerce operations conducted through Facebook.

Daraz has positioned itself as a full-service marketplace offering product variety, delivery infrastructure and buyer protection policies. The platform’s claim to be the country’s largest e-commerce operation is based on its product catalogue size and delivery network, though independent market share data comparing Bangladeshi platforms remains limited.
Md Tajdin Hassan, chief marketing officer of Daraz Bangladesh, said the company planned to focus on improving customer experience. “Over the last seven years, we became a trusted brand name in the field of e-commerce. The upcoming journey will not just be about inviting more customers, but ensuring that our existing customers are getting the best e-commerce experience catered to their lifestyles,” Hassan said.
The anniversary event also featured Mehazabien Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi actress and model, as a guest at the digital press conference. The promotional campaign ran for seven days to coincide with the company’s seventh year of operations.
E-commerce platforms in Bangladesh face challenges including logistics infrastructure limitations in rural areas, payment gateway adoption rates and consumer trust in online transactions. Daraz operates its own delivery network in major cities while partnering with third-party logistics providers for coverage in smaller towns and rural districts.
