- Ball Corporation to build two-line beverage can facility in Uttar Pradesh by 2029
- Third Indian facility joins existing plants in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh
- US packaging firm entered India in 2016 and now operates in three states
Ball Corporation, the US-based aluminium packaging manufacturer, has announced plans to establish a new beverage can manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh, marking its third production site in India as it seeks to expand its presence in the country’s growing sustainable packaging market.
The facility will house two production lines and is expected to become operational by 2029, the company said in a statement on 11 September. Ball Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, already operates two facilities in India: one in Taloja, Maharashtra, and another in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.
The company did not disclose the investment amount for the new plant but said the project is expected to generate strong economic value added, a measure of profitability that accounts for the cost of capital. The expansion is backed by customer contracts, Ball Corporation said.
Ball Corporation India expansion
Ball Corporation entered the Indian market in 2016 and has since expanded its manufacturing footprint across multiple states. The company produces beverage cans in various formats for both global brands and domestic Indian companies from its existing facilities.
“Our vision is to build a plant network in India that supports our customers and reaches the majority of states across India,” said Mandy Glew, senior vice president and president for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia at Ball Corporation.
“India continues to be one of Ball’s most important strategic growth markets, and this investment reflects our confidence in the country’s long-term economic potential and the continued growth of aluminium packaging,” Glew added.
The company has made recent investments in its Taloja and Sri City facilities to strengthen its position in the Indian market, though it did not specify the nature or scale of these investments.
Aluminium packaging
Aluminium beverage cans are increasingly positioned as a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging. The material is infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, and the recycling process requires significantly less energy than producing new aluminium from raw materials.
India’s beverage industry has seen growing adoption of aluminium cans, driven by both domestic and multinational brands seeking sustainable packaging solutions. The country’s organised beverage market, which includes carbonated drinks, energy drinks and ready-to-drink teas, has expanded as urbanisation and rising disposable incomes drive consumption.
